Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is fundamental to our commitment to support the SJS mission to nurture the whole child. Beginning in Kindergarten, teachers create opportunities for students to develop the skills necessary to identify and manage emotions, develop an attitude of respect for self, others, and community, and effectively resolve conflicts and problem-solve. Skills are formally taught at each grade level and strategies are embedded throughout the curriculum. Throughout the school experience, students are given opportunities for personal reflection, positive interactions, and demonstrations of collective empathy. Additionally, assembly programs and advisories bring students together to address important topics such as substance abuse prevention, healthy sexuality and violence prevention, physical wellbeing, and mindfulness.
Our SEL curriculum is based on an integrated framework developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), promoting intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence. Click here
