School Year Abroad
(SYA) is the only secondary level school in which American students live for a full year with a family abroad while earning U.S. graduation credits and receiving rigorous preparation for top U.S. colleges and universities. Every year SYA sends approximately 60 eleventh and twelfth graders to each one of our unique schools in Rennes, France; Zaragoza, Spain; Viterbo, Italy; and Beijing, China.
SYA is a consortium
of member schools in the United States. The charter members of the consortium are Phillips Academy (Andover, MA), Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter, NH) and St. Paul's School (Concord, NH).
For China, no previous study of Mandarin is necessary for students who wish to spend their junior, senior or post-graduate year with us in Beijing. For Italy, we will be accepting applications from beginners, as well as those who have already begun the study of Latin. For France and Spain, prospective juniors must have completed at least two years of study of the target language, French or Spanish. A representative from SYA will visit language classes in the fall. Interested students are encouraged to attend the travel tea on Sunday, September 30, at 3 p.m. All interested students must complete an internal application with Academic Dean Jennifer Kuhl by the deadline in the fall of their sophomore year to be considered to go abroad junior year.
