Parents' Guild Volunteer Opportunities

All School Book Fair & Family Night

This year's "Camp Book Fair: S'More Fun with Reading" will be held in Flores Hall on Wednesday, October 10, and Thursday, October 11. Book Fair Family Night, which features visiting and community authors, music, and a delectable meal for the whole family, will be held in Flores Hall and on the Great Lawn on Thursday, October 11. Lower and Middle School students will hear from our visiting author and will have a scheduled opportunity to visit the fair with their classes and advisors. Parent volunteers are needed to set up the fair, organize displays, assist children with book selections, facilitate Family Night, and break down the fair. 
Time commitment: Most volunteer shifts for Book Fair are approximately 1-2.5 hours

Candlelight
The Candlelight service is a St. John's holiday season tradition. Volunteers help decorate for the evening service. This year, the service will be held Sunday, December 9, at 5 p.m. in St. John the Divine. 
Time commitment: 1.5-3 hours

Homecoming Picnic
The annual St. John's vs. Kinkaid football game tailgate will take place at the Rice University stadium parking lot on Friday, November 2. Volunteers are needed to work on decorations and event set-up/tear-down. Play a part in this fun tradition!

Mailings
This committee helps assemble mailings for school events throughout the year (ex: Homecoming Game and Picnic tickets, Grandparents and Special Friends Day).
Time commitment: Typically, volunteers are needed once or twice a year for several hours for mailing sessions.

Parent Book Discussions
Join SJS faculty and community members as we share a stimulating and lively discussion of timely books. Two discussions will be held during the school year. Sign up to receive information and reminders. All are welcome, regardless of whether you have read the book! Be sure to check the School calendar for dates!

Thanksgiving Pies
Volunteers will assist with distributing pies to faculty and staff on the last day of school prior to the Thanksgiving holiday (Friday, November 16). Help continue this long-standing SJS tradition!

Used Uniforms
The Used Uniform Committee manages the Used Uniform Sales. Volunteers are needed to sort donated uniforms and organize them for sale in the Used Uniform closet (Q205A—upstairs in Farish Hall on the Upper School Campus). All proceeds go toward the SJS Scholarship Fund. Excess or unsellable uniforms are donated to charities. Committee members are on site to assist customers with their purchases during the sales.

Wassail
Volunteers are needed to help decorate and supply baked goods for this reception immediately following Candlelight on Sunday, December 9, in Flores Hall.
