Congratulations to 2016 SPC Champions St. John's Boys' Cross Country for winning their third title in a row. The Girls' team finished fourth.
Maverick Girls’ Cross Country started things off for St. John’s on SPC Saturday. The course was blanketed with a mist similar to the race a year ago in which the Mavericks shredded the field with a veteran squad. The only returning runner from last year’s top five was Peyton Brown ’17, who finished today’s race in third place with a time of 18:55.3. She was joined in the 2016 all-conference circle with a younger cast of Mavericks- 13th place Kat Johnston ’20 and 16th place Catie Beck ’20. The Mavericks scored a total of 83 points good enough for fourth place.
“The freshmen and sophomores have filled the gap and I’m looking forward to what they can do next year,” said Brown. “I hope they will think of me like we did of the girls who graduated last year.”
While the Boys’ graduated their top runner, Joe Faraguna ’16, from last year’s championship team, the Mavericks depth once again prevailed for a third title in three years. St. John’s scored 63 points, 43 points ahead of runner-up St. Mark’s. Drew Woodfolk ’18 led the way for the Mavericks in fifth place with a time of 16:37.7. Sam Faraguna ’19 finished 12th just ahead of Jayan Hanson ’17 in 13th. Sean Jackson ’18 was 15th followed by Pearse Higgason ’18 in 18th. Ian Thakur ’18, and Samuel Ho ’18 just missed the all-conference mark finishing 21 and 22 respectively.
“Not everybody was perfect today, ” said Head Coach Richie Mercado ’79. “We had players banged up including one who took a spill on the course today. It was still a convincing win.”
