Taub Field played host to the annual St. John's Alumni Baseball game on May 10th, 2014. The Rebel/Mavericks put a good looking team on the field as usual. The current team was missing a few players, but Coach Halevy and Coach Peavy managed their lineup well and even called up a few rookies in Charles Britton and Rob Wallace. Headmaster Mark Desjardins got the day started by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
The 2014 Mavericks got on the board early in the bottom of the 1st inning when Stephen Spears tripled to lead off the game. Coach Halevy and Peavy went straight to small ball and Jim Mace executed a squeeze play to perfection plating Spears for the first run of the game. It was a close game throughout but the alums pulled out the W 4-3 in a five inning time shortened game.
Matt Rider and Frank Hogan split the pitching duties on the mound. Both looked like they were still in game shape as they threw strikes and kept the Maverick hitters off balance. Hogan was credited with the win for the alums. Will Grundy had a big day at the plate going 2 for 2 with a big 2RBI double late in the game. Christian Segner played gold glove caliber defense at shortstop for the alums. The voters are still arguing over MVP with Rider, Hogan, Grundy, Segner, and others getting votes.
Thanks to Marty Thompson and David Tipps for helping to organize the game again this year.
