Girls' Golf stays the course with a program best 2nd place performance. Boys' Golf closes at 11th.
On day one of SPC competition Monica Dayao-74, Grace Wilson-90, Mary Ellsion-93, Emily Griffith-93, and Marion Gibson-97 all shot their career lows. Trailing Casady by 15 strokes, the Mavericks set their sites on second place. Two years ago the Mavericks were in a similar position after the first day of SPC, and wound up in 10th.
On Tuesday Dayao (74/80), Wilson (90/88), and the rest of the team would score one for the record. After all five Maverick players turned in their cards, the St. John's secured a runner-up finish, the best team performance in the history of the program.
“Given our small collapse a couple of years ago, I'd say we persevered quite well this time around,” said Head Coach Jack Soliman. “A mix of veteran leadership and some new, youthful talent made for a dangerous combination.”
After a 339 team performance on day one to start the tournament, Maverick Boys’ Golf came to the course the second day determined to make a move up the leader board. Stuart Jones 79-79, John Sholeen 82-85, Will Duson 88-83, Robert Royce 87-87, and John Armstrong 88-85 tallied for an eleventh place finish.
“Although we improved ten shots from the first day to the next, we did not climb the board as much as we would have liked,” said Soliman. “In any case, the boys worked hard and produced solid improvement throughout the year.”
