Maverick Wrestling crosses Buffalo Bayou to win again at the St. Thomas Invitational, this time with a deeper lineup.
On the backs of a team performance St. John’s won the St. Thomas Invitational for second year in a row. The Mavericks found themselves in the finals of 6 out of the 14 weight classes with Nathan Avery’13(220) and Douglas Moody’14 (152) grabbing first place. Raymon Yuan ’15 (126), Preston Neal ’14 (160), Eric Hobby ’13 (180), and Ben Stein’13 (138) all finished second. Yo Akiyama ’16 (120), Sean Yuan ’14 (145), and Sam Oliver ’13 (195) took third. Cyrus Lee ’16 (113) and Daniel Jellins ’14 (HW) finished fourth. The Mavericks scored 126 team points beating out Beaumont Westbrook, as well as St. Thomas, last year’s state championship team.
“It was a full team effort,” said Head Coach Alan Paul. “The biggest difference between this year’s win and last year’s was that we had more guys finished in 3rd and 4th place this time around. Plus Moody’s first place finish was a huge surprise for us.”
“It was fun to repeat,” said Avery.
“With only a couple of practices we showed a lot and we still have plenty to brush up on,” said Hobby.
