The Review Sweeps Lone Star Awards

The Houston Press Club has announced the results of the annual Lone Star Awards, and editors of The Review swept the student print news or feature story category, which was open to college and high school publications.

First place went to Executive Editor Dani Yan '18 for his story on Evan '18 and Steve Hammerman's water rescue missions during Harvey: “Deliverance: How a father-son duo decided to brave Harvey’s waters.” Yan, a four-year veteran of The Review, will be attending Duke University in the fall.

Second place went to assignment editor Sophie Caldwell's special report on the importance of consent education: “Culture of Silence: How a lack of consent education harms high school students.” Caldwell, a rising senior, was recently named one of two Editors-in-chief for 2018-2019.

A trio of editors shared third place for their team reporting on school safety and security. Executive Editor Dani Yan, Online Editor-in-chief Emily Chen '18, and copy editor Sophie Gillard wrote “Locked Down: Campus security changes prove vital," which was the cover story for the January issue, just five weeks before the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Chen, who spent four years on The Review, will be attending Brown University in the fall. Gillard, a rising senior, will become news editor next year.
