Boys' Basketball started off SPC for the Mavericks with a first-round loss to North 5 seed Oakridge. St. John's moved to the consolation bracket rebounding for wins over St. Stephen's and John Cooper for 9th place.

Girls' Basketball, the South 5 seed, tipped off the second contest for the Mavericks against North 4 seed Hockaday Daisies. The Mavericks went up on Daisies and never looked back. St. John's led 19-15 at the half and 29-23 going into the fourth quarter. Hockaday kept hanging around, but St. John's would not let up on both ends of the floor. Gabby Long '19 led the Mavs offense with 14 points, while Eliza Holt '20 scored a dozen including free throws late in the game to seal the win. Alexandra Lewis '19, who led the team with 8 rebounds, handled the Daisies' press with poise and the Mavericks were able to keep the momentum on their side for the 39-35 first-round win.

"It was good finally being able to finish, said Long. "I've been struggling this season with my shots, so it means a lot to help out my team. Shouts to the JV guys who helped us in practice."

Girls' Basketball did not have much time to rest. They took on South 1-seed Kinkaid on Friday morning losing 50-20.  St. John's finished the season with a 38-32 win over St. Andrews for fifth place.

Boys' Soccer, the South 3-seed, struggled offensively against North 6-seeded FWCD Falcons. The Mavericks outshot FWCD, but outstanding Falcon goalkeeping kept the game scoreless at the half and almost through regulation. Luc Ware '18 served up several corner kicks and crosses and his last one found William Wallace '20 for the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to go.

"I remember two years ago we were the third seed and this is the same kind of magic we had then," said Lucas Tyler '19. "I don't think I've seen a better goalkeeper. Some of the shots I took were perfect but did not go in."

"You got to give credit to FWCD, said Ware. "They came to play, but we had a lot of heart. Hopefully tomorrow we are going to have that same heart."

"I think we played great and I am looking forward to the rest of the tournament," said Alec Jazaeri '20.

The Mavericks went toe to toe with St. Mark's in the conference championship quarterfinals. Knotted up at 0-0 after time expired in regulation, the game went into two overtime periods before St. Mark's put in the lone goal of the game on a direct kick outside of the box. St. John's defense was stellar for over 90 minutes of play, but the Mavericks could not get on the board against the Lions.  They ended the season with a 3-2 loss to Cistercian for sixth place.

Girls' Soccer (S2) started out strong on SPC Friday.  In the morning game, they beat Greenhill 5-1 to advance to the SPC semi-finals against the four-time reigning SPC champion ESD Eagles, the team that ended the Mavericks 2017 season at the last SPC. Using the momentum they built in their first-round game, the Mavericks offense never went into neutral.  SJS built a 3-0 lead over the Eagles at the half and put in a fourth goal in the second period for a 4-0 win.  Two streaks ended abruptly.  ESD's 50 conference game winning streak from four-consecutive SPC titles was over, and St. John's Girls' Soccer has gone beyond the conference semi-finals for the first time in the history of the program. St. John' played Kinkaid for the SPC Championship. The Mavericks got scored on in the first minute and trailed 3-0 at the half.  St. John's rallied but could not catch Kinkaid losing 3-2.

SPC Saturday belonged to Wrestling and Boys' and Girls' Swimming.  Wrestling put up 221 points for their 5th SPC title in the last 6 years.  EHS was runner-up with 131 points. Eight out of ten wrestlers won their finals matches with six coming off of pins or falls.

For Maverick Swimming it all came down to the last races of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relays. Girls' Swimming needed to win their race against a heavily favored Kinkaid Falcon squad. The speed time for the Maverick Girls was significantly slower thank Kinkaid's, but St. John's managed to drop almost 9 seconds off their speed projected time to clock in at 3:34.12.  Kinkaid finished in 3:40.07, less than a second better than their speed time. Both teams finished with 118 points and were crowned co-champions. The Boys' third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay was enough to knock off perennial champion St. Mark's 106-102.
