Head of Middle School Appointed

St. John's looks forward to welcoming Chia-Chee (Chachi) Chiu as SJS Head of Middle School starting on July 1, 2020. The unique combination of her teaching, leadership, and administrative roles and experiences within a diverse range of independent schools will serve her well as she begins her tenure at St. John’s.

Growing up in Miami, Chia-Chee matriculated at Tulane University where she earned a double major in English and ecology. Continuing her passion for and interest in education, Chia-Chee received a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Kansas and another Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, she has completed work toward her doctorate in educational leadership through the “all but dissertation” phase.

She brings extensive experience as a middle school science teacher and curriculum leader. Chia-Chee held faculty appointments at Latin School of Chicago, University Lake School in Hartland, WI, The School at Columbia University in New York City, and Ethical Culture Fieldston School in Riverdale, NY. In 2009, Chia-Chee left the classroom to pursue her doctoral work actively at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She later returned to Ethical Culture Fieldston School (ECFS) as Middle School Assistant Principal and in 2016 was appointed Middle School Head. During her tenure, Chia-Chee facilitated a comprehensive curricular and schedule review within her division and led important strategic conversations related to faculty professional development and issues pertaining to equity and inclusion.

Commenting on her leadership and tenure at ECFS, the ECFS Head of School noted that Chia-Chee leads with vision, passion, and integrity. She is student-centered and comes with a broad understanding of and appreciation for how middle school students operate. In addition to her work within specific schools, Chia-Chee has consistently been recognized for her strong leadership potential as she was selected as a National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Aspiring Heads Fellow and was a participant in the NAIS School Leadership Institute (SLI). Since last summer (2019), she was invited to serve on the faculty for SLI and will be there again this summer. With her parents’ recent move to Austin, where her brother also lives, Chia-Chee and her husband, David Gill, are pleased to begin their new adventure in Houston this coming summer.
