Luke Kramer ’15 Awarded Gates Cambridge Scholarship

SJS alumnus Luke Kramer ’15 was recently awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship for graduate studies. He is one of 34 American students selected to study at the University of Cambridge in England. Luke was selected in the first of two rounds for October 2019 entry. He is currently working on his A.B. in chemistry at Harvard and plans to pursue a M. Phil in chemistry at Cambridge. As an undergraduate student at Harvard, Luke pursued his interests in service work and chemistry research. He volunteered with Harvard Undergrads Raising Autism Awareness and began collaborations with Sesame Street, the Boston Red Sox, and the Museum of Fine Arts.

After Cambridge, Luke would like to earn an MD-PhD degree and use inorganic chemistry to address unsolved problems in medicine, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Luke said he feels "enormously grateful to join the Gates Cambridge community and learn from other students whose research questions are inspired by the needs of those around them." Luke is the 2nd St. John's alumnus to be granted this scholarship. Brett Gutstein ’13 was a recipient in 2018 and is currently getting his PhD in computer science.

According to the Gates Cambridge website, "the prestigious postgraduate scholarship program–which fully funds postgraduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge - was established through a $210 million donation to the University of Cambridge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000; this remains the largest single donation to a UK university. Since the first class in 2001 there have been more than 1,600 Gates Cambridge Scholars from over 100 countries who represent more than 600 universities globally (more than 200 in the USA) and more than 80 academic departments and all 31 Colleges at Cambridge."

St. John's would like to extend congratulations to Luke on this outstanding accomplishment and best wishes on his future endeavors at Cambridge!
