Thank you for taking the time to explore our website. The website serves two important functions. First, it serves as the primary communication tool between the School and our various constituents. We encourage you to visit this site daily for news, events, and calendar updates. Second, if you are exploring St. John's School as an option for your child, we hope you gain some important insights into the fantastic range of opportunities and experiences we offer. While we are proud of our longstanding tradition of academic achievement, including our large percentage of National Merit Finalists and Advanced Placement Scholars, the St. John's experience is not limited to selective college admission and high SAT scores. Indeed, our comprehensive mission goes well beyond preparing students for college. Through the variety of opportunities we offer, the St. John's experience focuses on developing the intellectual, ethical, social, spiritual, moral, aesthetic, and physical capacities of every student that we enroll.
Alan Lake Chidsey, the founding and long-serving headmaster of St. John's, believed in creating a "school of exacting standards," but was equally adamant that students live up to St. Luke's pronouncement that "to whom much is given much is expected." In fact, Chidsey's dream was to have students depart the school with a servant’s mentality. Chidsey's legacy is revealed today in St. John's outstanding voluntary community service program where last year alone, members of our Upper School worked together to provide greater Houston with over 42,000 hours of voluntary service.
From its origins in 1946, St. John's has evolved into one of the most respected independent day schools in the country. On a daily basis we try to live up to the high expectations of the original group of Houstonians who had the vision and wisdom to pour their energies and direct their resources into creating an educational experience that produces intellectually curious, civic-minded, and well-rounded citizens. Thank you again for your interest in St. John's School and I look forward to meeting you when you visit our campus.
Sincerely,Mark DesjardinsHead of Schoolmdesjardins@sjs.org
