SAT Camp Perhaps you’ve heard from friends about the infinite joys of SAT Camp: canoeing down a waterfall of standardized tests, aiming steel-tipped arrows at essay prompts, and roasting marshmallows on an open flame of mathematical equations. Now it’s your turn.
This summer, from August 5th-Aug 15th join Mrs. Martha Childress, chair of SJS math department, and Dr. Dwight Raulston, SJS English and math instructor and director of curriculum, for a rigorous but fun preparation course for 2013-2014 PSAT and SAT tests. Each day we will meet for ninety minutes of verbal instruction and practice and ninety minutes of mathematics instruction and practice. The course will go from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
In the math section, Mrs. Childress will reacquaint students with the algebraic and geometrical concepts that the test expects them to have mastered. She will offer certain strategies that will help students work through the College Board’s maze of math efficiently and effectively.
The verbal preparation will fine-tune students’ abilities to read and analyze carefully and comfortably under the test’s draconian time constraints. Students will learn how to write cogent essay responses as the clock ticks away. What’s more, students will read a mystery novel written expressly to help high school students prepare for the SAT’s esoteric vocabulary words.
The course will be open to students entering grades 9-12, at St. John’s or elsewhere. The cost for the two-week course will be $650; that price includes books and supplemental materials.
Enrollment is limited to 40 “campers.” If you want to sign up—or if you simply want more information—please contact Martha Childress ( mchildress@sjs.org) as soon as possible.
