Associate Director of College Counseling (starting July 24, 2024)

St. John’s School is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable college counselor for the 2024-25 academic year.  The college counseling team is robust and consists of one director, five full-time college counselors, one part-time college counselor, and two administrative assistants. St. John’s is a co-ed, independent, K-12 day school with a full-time enrollment of 1,425 students (709 Upper School students), located in the heart of central Houston. 49 percent of St. John’s students self-identify as students of color. This is a 10.5-month salaried position.
 
 
The primary responsibilities include:

  • Advise a student caseload of approximately 30 students through all aspects of the college search process, including researching schools, crafting a college list, the application and essay-writing process, and writing their letters of recommendation
  • Conduct individual, family, small group, and class-wide meetings
  • Support students in the brainstorming and completion of scholarship and college applications, including the writing and editing process of the personal statement, resume, and supplemental essays
  • Collaborate closely with the current College Counseling team to develop and implement thoughtful, effective college counseling strategies, innovative programming, and best practices in the context of St. John’s School
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with college admission officers, including hosting them during their visits to campus
  • Stay informed on current admissions and counseling trends, maintain membership in and attend professional associations and conferences, participate in campus visits and tours, and network extensively with college admissions and college counseling colleagues
  • Plan and execute a variety of on-campus college counseling programs, such as parent/guardian and student-centered programs, workshops, college alumni panels, a College Counseling preparation course for juniors, and essay writing seminars
  • Assist with producing and editing all outward communications such as weekly, monthly, and quarterly newsletters, and presentations for family and student events
  • Participation in some weekend and evening programs is required
  • Maintain regular communication via emails, calls, and/or meetings with students and parents/guardians throughout the college search and application process
  • Serve as an advisor for approximately 8 students and have a strong appreciation for the value of social emotional learning (SEL)
  • Engage enthusiastically and actively in the St. John’s School community, including chaperoning and attending student events
  • Other duties as assigned, all within the context of being an integral member of and contributor to a dynamic, vibrant Upper School community of educators
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree or higher is strongly preferred
  • A minimum of three or more years in college counseling and/or college admission
  • A commitment to carry out our school's mission statement that "every student is known and loved"
  • Strong writing, interpersonal, and communication skills, capable of multitasking and overseeing multiple projects, ability to work in a fast-paced independent school setting
  • A commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency in a community that celebrates and appreciates diversity
  • Team player and self-starter who can both collaborate effectively as well as think independently (we capitalize on the different skills and expertise that each of our college counselors brings to the team and expect each member to contribute insight and new ideas that will bring constant improvement to our program)
